Pleasures in life

I can’t remember the first time I got attracted towards technology or science. But I would always remember the first time I got hooked to a computer. It was back during my 6th Standard when I first laid my eyes on a 8086 PC in my school when I got a chance to play the classic DOS game “Space Invaders” and there was no turning back. The world of “Dangerous Dave”, “Hocus Pocus”, “Pac-man” was slowly replaced by their ever evolving counterparts. So when I passed out of the school it was “Knights and Merchants ” and “Age of Empires” which slowly gave way to “Project IGI” and “Warcraft”. The last serious gaming I did and the only game I played here in UAE was “Rise of Nations” when I joined work here some 4 years back. Games were not the only thing that kept me hooked to a computer. For a while it was BASIC, C, MATLAB, a little VB and loads of web programming. But after I came here, I had a whole playground called “Networks” to play with. Even though my primary role in the organization was something related to power systems, I found myself volunteering to setup and troubleshoot the network and systems that were ever growing. With a server and DSL in my disposal it was good old college times for me. The best of all experiences was building a firewall from scratch using a Linux distribution called IPCOP with obsolete hardware and the great part being that it has been working for past 2 years. But all good things must come to an end. Until yesterday, one of the roles in the organization I work for was IT Manager/Administrator. Since I needed to concentrate more on something else and time was not something that was available in abundance, I had to give up this role which I had taken up voluntarily. But somehow computers and technology keep calling and I decided to do something in return. I have created a separate blog called “bit Feed” which would be solely about technology, computers and internet. Here I plan to discuss about my experiences with different software, hardware, internet services, tips and tricks, science and technology. In case any of you who is interested in becoming a contributor or author for this blog, please do contact me. Jun 08
According to the “Art of War“, one should know when he can fight a battle and when he cannot. I have finally come to the realisation, that some battles are not worth it. So as of today, I am giving up something which I had cared for all these 4 years just to avoid a messy situation. Somebody came up to me and asked me today, Why did you give up so easily ? All I could manage was to quote Bernard Shaw, “I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig, you get dirty; and besides, the pig likes it“. |
