Software
I try to use and spread Open Source software and solutions as far as possible. Below is a little list of links of software that are part of the Open Source domain or Freeware that I use and think you might find useful. Please try these softwares and if you like them, then spread the word around.
Internet
Mozilla Firefox – One of the most versatile and customisable browsers. You can enhance its functionality with various add-ons.
Filezilla – An open source, cross-platform FTP client. It supports FTP, SFTP, and FTPS. Also features an FTP server supported by the same project and features.
HTTrack – Offline browser utility, which helps you to download an entire website to your local system.
Free Download Manager – A powerful, easy-to-use download accelerator and manager. It increases your download speed and resume broken downloads. Also supports BitTorrent protocol
Graphic Editors
GIMP – A Photo editing application that rivals Photoshop in features.
Inkscape – A great vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X.
XnView – A software to view and convert graphic files and which supports more than 400 formats. I also use it for batch renaming of my digital photographs.
Office Applications
Openoffice.org – An office application suite available for a number of different computer operating systems. Much better than Micro$oft’s Office suite.
PDFCreator – PDFCreator easily creates PDFs from any Windows program. Use it like a printer in any application.
Freemind – A premier mind-mapping software written in Java. It is a high productivity tool helping you to map your ideas and use it as a note manager too.
GnuCash – Personal and small-business financial-accounting software which implements a double-entry bookkeeping system. It allows you to track bank accounts, stocks, income and expenses.
Multimedia
The Godfather – A application to consistently rename, update tags, restructure files on hard disk, create/merge play lists, encode-decode, export/import to/from file, catalog them in a library.
VLC – A portable multimedia player, encoder, and streamer supporting many audio and video codecs and file formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.
InfraRecorder – A free CD/DVD burning solution to create custom data, audio and mixed-mode discs as well as disc images.
System Utilities
7-Zip - A file archiver which helps to create or open numerous compressed, non-compressed, archive formats. It is also portable.
Password Safe – A free Windows password-storage utility that encrypts all of your passwords using one passphrase. It allows you to manage your old passwords and to easily and quickly generate, store, organize, retrieve, and use complex new passwords.
CCleaner – A freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.
