“The system shall be of fail-safe design, i.e., in no case shall a device failure jeopardise the integrity of the power or the safety of plant and personnel.”
The above statement is part of a technical specification of an electrical utility. In a normal world, you would expect safety of the personnel to come first and the rest to be next. But here we place the safety of the plant first and then comes the personnel in it.
You would be living in a fantasy world, if you had assumed that machines were just here to serve and make our lives better. It is quite ironical to know that presently our goal is to make sure that the machines are running, even if we are not making our lives better….
